There’s a local band called Moonroof. I’ve followed them on Facebook for a bit now and their music has grown on me. I reached out to the band and we got to chat a bit. Currently the band consists of Dave Kim – lead singer, Kevin Randolph – Bass, Dan Rendine – Drums, Johnny Fordyce – guitar and backing vocals.
So…. for a few years I’ve seen you guys pop up in my Facebook feed and have listened to the clips and like everything on Facebook… it’s a quick hit, listen for a second and move on. Recently though a song caught my attention MAYBE CRAZY. Not sure if it randomly popped up or if I had started watching it on Youtube and it came back to me. Anyway, I liked it and then hunted down a few other songs of yours.. some of which go back a few years.
So, the thing is, when and where did Moonroof form?
Dave: So Moonroof originally formed when me, Kevin, and Dan were all at Bloomsburg University, we all lived on the same floor and found a shared interest in bands like The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club, and The Killers. We would play open mic nights and events around campus and when it was getting close to graduation I asked the guys if they wanted to take the next steps and try to do music full time in Philly. We moved down to Conshy and lived together for a few years so it was really cool to spend that time with each other and made practice really convenient. We were able to write a lot and get our chemistry as a band tighter because of that.
Are you guys currently in the Conshohocken area? I knew there was a local connection.
Dave: Yes! Well kind of, I still live in the exact same house in Conshy we moved in when we first moved down here. Me, Kevin, and Dan all lived in the house together for 4 years and then Kevin moved to Philly in 2023 and Dan moved to King of Prussia in 2025. Our guitarist Johnny has been playing with us for two years now and he’s also based in Philly.
Have you played anywhere near here and more importantly, do you have any upcoming shows or a tour?
Dave: Yes! We love playing locally, most of our shows now are in Philly but we’ve played at The Grape in Manayunk, The Nail in Ardmore, and The Gem in Spring City. We actually have an upcoming Philly show on Saturday February 28th at Underground Arts and we have a few weekend tours coming up where we’ll be heading all the way down to Greensboro, NC the weekend of 2/21 and Columbus, OH the weekend of 3/7.
I love shows at the Underground Arts. Great sounding room. You should have a great crowd there.
Who are the members of the band and has the lineup ever changed?
Dave: We have Kevin Randolph who’s our bassist, Dan Rendine who’s our drummer, Johnny Fordyce who’s our guitarist/backing vocals and then I’m Dave Kim and I’m the singer. We’ve had a few lineup changes; me, Kev, and Dan are all original members and we’ve had a few guitarists over the years but I believe this lineup of Moonroof is one of the tightest we’ve had.
Sorry I’m jumping around here…. you have a unique sound, who are your inspirations and does anyone say you remind them of a certain band?
Dave: For sure! We get told a few different bands we sound like, we’ve heard anything from The Killers to Turnover. I think our biggest inspiration as a whole would be The 1975. I used to want to sound just like them but over the years we’ve started to form our own sound and at this point I don’t think we really sound like them in anything we’ve released recently. They still hold a big influence for us but I actually think where we get our sound from is through our individual influences which makes us unique. Kevin really loves bands like Radiohead, Weezer, and Modern Baseball. Dan really loves Childish Gambino, Two Door Cinema Club, and Paramore. Johnny loves Phish, The Marias, and Slow Pulp. And I really like The 1975, Modern Baseball, and Two Door Cinema Club. It’s kind of a wide range of music amongst all of us but there’s some overlap which helps.
Tell us where to buy your music… any merch out there?
Dave: Yeah! Our music is available to stream on all music streaming platforms as Moonroof and you can buy digital copies of our music on Bandcamp, we have a pay what you wish option so fans can choose to donate if they’d like. We have t-shirts, hats, and hoodies available on our website at Moonroofmusik.com and we also have it available through our Spotify in the merch tab. We also can ship orders anywhere in the US.
Okay, you mentioned the tour, how about any new albums coming out?
Dave: Right now we’re planning to release a couple singles this year, we actually have a new single called ‘Massachusetts’ coming out Wednesday February 18th to kick off the upcoming tour. We’ll be playing it all through tour and at our hometown show in Philadelphia on February 28th as well as playing songs from our debut album that came out this past summer.
Where do you record these songs and albums?
Dave: We record with our friend Tyler Ripley Lewis at Little Brother Audio in Philadelphia through the collective we’re a part of called Free Dive Collective
Alright…. guys, where do you eat when you are in Conshohocken or the community, throw out some of your favorite restaurants or cool places.
Dave: Love me some El Lemon and the new cheese steak place Pops is actually soo good! Also shout out to Superfit and The Fellowship house to help with my mental state when dealing with the music!
Kevin: Conshy has a lot of great places. I especially love Deli on 4th, El Limon, and Eat Greek. Plus feine for coffee and Conshohocken Brewing for drinks.
Johnny: I personally love El Limon and Eat Greek, can never go wrong with either spot and shoutout to Andy’s Diner for being a great late night spot to eat at as well.
Dan: I love Great American Pub, Guppy’s, Deli on 4th, Conshy Brewing and Stone Rose. I’ve had some great food at all of them and the drinks and good times at Great American Pub and Guppy’s have been some of my favorite nights in town.
Guys, it’s been great chatting with you. You mentioned the Free Dive Collective, anyone else you want to mention either that has helped with the band over the years or just as humans beings.
Dave: I’m grateful for all the connections and interactions we had over the years! Thankful to my band mates for following this dream and thankful for our little team to keep on improving over the years.
Kevin: Shout out to the crew at Free Dive Collective. They do so much to make it all happen. And of course we couldn’t do it without all the support from our friends and listeners over the years.
Johnny: I’m thankful for our fam at Free Dive who always help us push ourselves creatively and our friends and fans who we get to see at shows, we wouldn’t be where we are without them.
Dan: I want to thank our family and friends who have been really supportive of us over the years, I think without having that backing Moonroof wouldn’t be what it is today. I also want to thank Tyler Ripley Lewis and Victor Sabatino for the hard work and dedication they’ve put into Moonroof, they really make our sound come to life and we wouldn’t be where we are without their expertise in recording/production.
Dave, Kevin, Johnny and Dan, I want to thank you and wish you all the best of luck!
I hope to catch a show one night in the future. I won’t get there at the Underground Arts show, I help out with the Conshy Adult Prom that takes place the same night. If any of you are grabbing something at the Deli on 4th, stop into Coll’s Custom Framing right next door and say hi.
I mentioned the song Maybe Crazy at the start of this, if you have a few minutes, go find it on YouTube.
Thanks for reading, hope you can give them a listen or follow their Facebook page.
