“In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. ‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, ‘he told me ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.’ “
These are the opening lines from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
If you have read anything I’ve ever written, no one is going to confuse me with F. Scott Fitzgerald. No one is ever going to confuse me with the titular character either, but maybe with Nick Carraway who does a fine job observing the chaos around him. Over the past few years I have observed hundreds of folks coming out to support three great charities near and dear to my heart. The Conshohocken Free Library, The Colonial Neighborhood Council and the Colonial Education Foundation.
The Conshohocken Adult Prom has raised over $20,000 over the past 5 events for these local charities.
This year the tickets are $100. For your money you get live music by Cindy King Jazz. You get to dance your shoes off to the band Live @ 5. In between sets, DJ Jammin J will keep you on the dance floor. Dancing isn’t your thing? How about the 360 video booth? The fun photo booth, or grab Michael Rice the photographer and have him take some posed photos. Grab a drink at the bar (beer, wine, soft drinks, selection of seltzers and a specialty drink of the night are included) Look for servers walking around with a selection of appetizers or check out a few items at the buffet. Beyond the great time you will have, walk away knowing you helped the Conshy Library, The CNC and the Colonial Education Foundation.
If you have read the book or seen one of the movies, you will remember the parties. The prom committee hopes you enjoy the party they have been planning for months. This year the prom committee put out a poll to help determine the theme. The votes were overwhelmingly in favor of The Great Gatsby. Something about the roaring 20’s spoke to people. The committee has some amazing decorations set to go up in The Great American Pub. The folks at the Pub have been wonderful to the community and they are so helpful with this event. Without their generosity, the event doesn’t raise thousands for the charities each and every year.
If you read the book, the closing lines are below. Of course there is some debate about what the author intended, not just with the closing lines, but the themes in the story. At the Conshy Adult Prom, the evening is pretty straight forward. The event kicks off at 7, don’t be late… you don’t want to miss Cindy King Jazz perform to kick the night off. Make sure you call a cab, use an Uber or ride share program or maybe even the Conshy Cab.
Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And one fine morning–
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
