This & That
By Jack Coll
This & That is a new column of short pieces, from different years and different topics. As I continue to research the history of Conshohocken I often run across interesting tid-bits, that aren’t worthy of a complete column or article, but yet are pretty interesting. So I’ll put this out to you guys, if you like the column, let us know, leave a comment. If we don’t get any replies we’ll pass over on the column and move to something different. The “This & That” column will run for three column’s adding a new column approximately every ten days or so. There is no rhyme or reason in the order of the tid-bits, nor is there any certain amount of them. Keep in mind that most of the clips are from the Conshohocken Recorder Newspaper, from assorted years. (depending on the year I was researching) a date will accompany each tid-bit.

Johnny Cassinelli, local amateur heavyweight boxer gained the decision over Al Henley of Marquis Club in the windup of the opening outdoor show at the Seymour Club Tenth Street and Washington Avenue in Philadelphia. Cassinelli gave the best exhibition of his career. The bout was so closely contested that many of the large crowd present disapproved the decision, believing it should have been a draw. The bout lasted only three rounds.

“Jimsy” Injured
James K. “Jimsy” DeMedio, a well known presence on the streets of Conshohocken for many years was injured in a fall last week, outside Fayette Meats, 523 Fayette Street. Conshohocken police said the accident occurred about 1:10 P.M. Thursday last week. They said a meter reader had left a cellar trap door open, DeMedio apparently tripped over the door and fell down the cellar steps. Jimsy hurt his knee, was treated at the hospital and released.

While a horse and wagon belonging to the manufacturers of mush and peanut butter was standing in front of Willmann’s & Leary’s Grocery Store on Friday, the horse became frightened and started down Fayette Street. In the wagon was a little boy, and but for the agility of Mr. Patrick Leary, there might have been a serious accident. Mr. Leary, fleet of foot, jumped over a wheelbarrow and grasped the horse and stopped him. He should have a Carnegie medal.
