T.V. Shows Theme Songs, Part 2
You Might Remember A Few Of These
By Jack Coll
10-2-14
We recently asked you to figure out the theme songs for the following shows:
Laverne & Shirley
WKRP In Cincinnati
Welcome Back Kotter
The Dukes Of Hazzard
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Brady Bunch
Gilligan’s Island
Mash
This week we’ll give you a whole new batch, with some small hints, and let’s see if you can match the song with the T V show.
1 Let’s start with a show that ran from 1988-1993, week after week this show had a lot of great music in it, and was never released on DVD because they had problems getting the rights from all the artists. They recently released a DVD set for all five seasons but without the music, and now there are reports that they have secured the rights to release the shows in the original form, with the exception of a few songs that they substituted. Check out the theme song played week after week, I’m sure you’ll recognize the song, but how about the show?
What would you do if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
I will try not to sing out of key, yea
Oh, baby I get by with a little help from my friends
By with a little help from my friends.
2 Okay, this is gonna be an easy one, from 1964-1968, we all learned to snap our fingers when this show came on. No matter what line I give you, it’s a dead giveaway, so the very hardest I can make this is to give you a couple lines from the second verse.
Their house is a museum
Where people come to see ‘em
They really are a scream
???????????
3 I think I was in love with one of these girls, I’m sure of it, I was ten years old and I wanted to live with her at her house, I think because she was always scheming and fooling her parents and where I came from that was love. This show ran from 1963-1966, and again it’s one of those theme songs that will give you the name of the show, so I picked out just the opening two lines, see if you can catch it!
Meet Cathy, who’s lived most everywhere
From Zanaibar to Barclay Square.
(com’on, you can get it)
4 This show ran from 1975-1988 and all I can say is they finally made it. This is one you should get from the lyrics, so give it a shot.
Well we’re movin’ on up
To the East Side
To a deluxe apartment in the sky
Movin’ on up
To the East Side,
We finally got a piece of the pie.
5 What-da-ya say we jump into the 90’s for one, this show ran from 1994-2004, and what a run they had, nearly everyone involved with the show are all stars now, it goes something like this!
So no one told you life was going to be this way
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, you’re love life’s DOA
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
Well it hasn’t been your day, your week,
Your month or even your year
6 This sitcom was based in Kansas and ran from 1965-1967, it didn’t run very long but it was
Memorable, but the lyrics might not help you.
The end of the Civil War was near
When quite accidentally
A hero who sneezed abruptly seized
Retreat and reversed it to victory
7 This star studded cast needs nothing more than the lyrics, it ran for eleven seasons from 1982-1993.
Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you’ve got
Taking a break from all your worries,
Sure would help a lot
Wouldn’t you like to get away
Sometimes you want to go
?????????????????????
8 Not a lot to say about this theme song, the show ran for nine seasons from 1962-1971.
Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed
(Do we really need to go on? You bet we do I love this song)
Then one day he was shootin at some food
And up through the ground came a bubblin crude
Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea
(Let’s just go ahead and finish the song)
Well the first thing you know ol Jed’s a millionaire
Kinfolk said “Jed move away from there”
Said “californy is the place you ought to be”
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly
Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, Movie stars
(last verse)
Well now it’s time to say good bye to Jed and all his kin
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in
You’re all invited back a gain to this locality
To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality
Hillybilly that is, set a spell, take your shoes off
Y’all come back now, y’hear?
9 Okay, last one, this show was a ground breaking series in so many ways with an eight year run from 1971-1979.
(Second verse)
And you knew who you were then
Girls were girls and men were men
Like Herbert Hoover again
Didn’t need no welfare state
Everybody pulled his weight
Gee our old LaSalle ran great
??????????
Answers
Well, how did you do!
Let’s check it out
1 We all know that the Beatles sang “With A Little Help From My Friends,” but the theme song to “The Wonder Years” was performed by Joe Cocker. “The Wonder Years” show starring Fred Savage and Danica McKellar as “Winnie” had great music representing the early and mid-1960’s throughout the show that included music from Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and many others. Securing the rights for DVD release has proved to be a nightmare.
2 You don’t need the answer to this show or theme song, let’s just give you the song in full, complete with finger snaps.
They’re creepy and they’re kooky
Mysterious and spooky
They’re all together ooky
The Addams Family
Their house is a museum
Where people come to see ‘em
They really are a scream
The Addams Family
NEAT
(Snap Snap)
Sweet
(Snap snap)
Petite
(I don’t think there was a snap snap after Petite, but we all snapped anyway.)
(So how many of you remember the second verse, I didn’t!)
So get a witches Shaw on
A broom stick you can crawl on
We’re gonna pay a call on
The Addams Family
“The Addams Family” starred John Astin as “Gomez” and of course everyone remembers “Lurch” the Butler played by Ted Cassidy, but do you remember the street address where he Addams family lived? That would be 0001 Cemetery Lane.
3 Once again, you don’t need me to tell you the name of the show if I give you the song, so let’s try this
Meet Cathy, who’s lived most everywhere
From Zanaibar to Barclay Square
But Patty’s only seen the sight
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights
What a crazy pair
But they’re cousins
Identical cousins all the way
One pair of matching bookends
Different as night and day
“The Patty Duke Show” of course!
4 “Movin’ on up, to the East side”, that was my man George and Louise, “The Jeffersons” Sherman Hemsley and Maria Gibbs gave us a lot of laughs over the years, the show ran for 253 episodes, do you remember their sons name in the show, that would be Lionel.
5 Maybe reading the second verse might help you if you’re stumped with this one:
But I’ll be there for you,
When the rain starts to pour
I’ll be there for you,
Like I’ve been there before
I’ll be there for you,
‘Cause you’re there for me too.
We’re talking about “Friends” of course, the song “I’ll Be There For You” was performed by the Rembrandts.
6 While the lyrics might not help you perhaps the actors will, there was Forrest Tucker, Larry Storch and Ken Berry manning Fort Courage, Kansas in the show “F Troop.” You might remember half the soldiers were making deals with Chief Wild Eagle.
7 Just let me pick up on the song where I left off:
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows our name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where
Everybody knows your name.
“Cheers” Let’s count the characters, we had Ted Danson as Sam Malone, George Wendt as Norm, Shelly Long, Rea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Bebe Neuwirth, Kirstie Alley, and Nicholas Colasanto, as Coach just to name a few. “Cheers” Bar was fashioned after the Bull & Finch Pub” located in Boston Massachusetts.
8 I know, I know, number eight was a tough one, come listen to a story about a man named Jed, was from the show “The Many Lives Of Dobie Gillis,” just kidding. It was the “The Beverly Hillbillies .“ The Clampette truck was a 1921 Oldsmobile, the original truck is at the College of Ozarks.
9 The answer to this one should be easy, let’s give you the first verse of the theme song:
Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the Hit Parade
Guys like us we had it made
Those were the days.
Archie and Edith, Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner, the song was
called, “Those Were The Days” and Carroll and Jean sang the song sitting at a piano in front of a
live studio audience each and every week.
