Simon’s Heart Conshohocken Bike Race Day
7/5/2024
by Brian Coll
We are about a month and a half away from what is hopefully the first annual Simon’s Heart Criterium Bike Race in Conshohocken.
Without seeing the map and before I talked to the organizers, I thought it was a long distance race that would be passing through Conshohocken similar to the way the bike race would go through Philadelphia and come through Manyunk. You know Conshohocken has plenty of hills that could have been a tough stretch of a larger race. As it turns out, the entire race takes place in Conshohocken in a somewhat small footprint.
I’m sure the streets are going to be blocked off for most of the day, so if you want to have a party along the route, tell everyone to make plans to walk a bit to get to your house. It looks like the official beer garden will be around the Great American Pub and Boathouse area without the race course being right there. Daniel’s will be the VIP area and have the podiums for the winners of each race. We understand Hotel West and Main might be having a party on their lawn area with live music as the day goes along.
What is Criterium racing? Trust me, I don’t have all the answers. Since there are different races throughout the day. From what I can tell, each race is allotted a certain time frame. In the case of the more advanced racers, they may pass Edwards Freeman Nut House (best candy store in the world) like 30 times in the hour race. From what I am understanding the loop is a bit more than a mile, these racers may complete each lap in about 2 minutes. This sounds like a great day of racing and let’s face it, partying in Conshohocken. There are kids races (still time to sign up to race), there are intermediate races and of course, some pro level racing.
Starting at noon there will be a women race category 3/4 (intermediate) , followed by the same level for men at 12:40 Masters Men will be at 1:30 with kids race at 2:25 (free to enter) then advanced/pro women at 2:50, then a community ride (free to enter) at 3:45 followed up by advanced/pro men at 4:20. Good luck to all of the racers, organizers and volunteers.
