People of Conshohocken – Sue McClure

12/12/2020

by Brian Coll

This is part of our People of Conshohocken series…

We have close to 10,000 people in our borough, add in the residents of West Conshohocken, Plymouth, Whitemarsh and Lafayette Hill and we have a large community. Some of the people that will be featured will be well known in the area, some will have just moved into the area, some will have been here their entire lives. Some of them may be business owners, or people who walk around the area, or maybe work in the area. Maybe you know them, maybe you don’t. Everyone has a story. While we are only going to take their picture and maybe ask a question or two, we want to share these stories with you.

************************************************************************************************

One of the biggest questions this time of year is about the live nativity scene at Conshohocken United Methodist Church (6th and Fayette). This year of course people are asking and wondering. Even as I write this, Santa is being driven around the borough by the fine men and women of the fire department. However…. it’s not like years past where people can take photos with Santa, or even thank the men and women volunteer firefighters. So, I got really lucky when Sue from Conshohocken united Methodist Church walked into Coll’s Custom Framing to pick up her bon bon order. I started asking her questions and then realized.. I needed to do my first People of Conshohocken since the pandemic started. So….Thank you Sue.

I asked about the live nativity scene, if it was taking place…. and that answer is Yes! Sue was hopeful that things could go on as planned with a little social distance between herself and the other volunteers in the manger as well as the people in the community coming to check it out.

I’ve seen Sue at the live nativity for years and I wondered just how long she’s been doing it.. I don’t want to put an age out there, but she’s been doing it since she was a teenager, so since she’s 29, she’s been doing this at least 10 or 11 years by now. Something I didn’t know but found it to be very cool was her dad Charles also participated in the live nativity for years.

I wondered what were some of the most memorable moments from over the years, Sue sadly recalled when a lamb passed away (through no fault of the church) and chuckled as she talked about the runaway animals. I also wondered when was the last year that they used live animals, and Sue chuckled as she said…. the year they ran down Fayette Street was the last year!

If you don’t recognize Sue from the live nativity and the other events at Conshohocken United Methodist Church, you may know her as Sue from Santander Bank. She has been there 15 years now. (Her and the rest of the staff at Santander Bank are amazing)

Sue, thanks for chatting with me a couple minutes today. It was good to see you in person as opposed to through the drive through glass at the bank.

And….since you kept reading, the Conshohocken United Methodist Church is hosting the live nativity December 18-20th from 7-9 p.m. See you there, wearing a mask of course.
