I got the chance to chat with Joe McCullough, of JMC Pop Ups. Here is a bit of the conversation:
Hi Joe, Brian here at Conshystuff.com I was at the Plymouth Meeting Mall the other night with my kids, they love that bungee jump thing in the center of the mall. While I was there I noticed some empty spaces and heard a whisper that something really cool was coming soon. I think that’s where you come in… Something about a pop up bar, but more than a bar. What is coming soon along those lines that you can tell us about?
We are bringing some excitement to the mall! We are opening two pop up experiences beginning January 28th to Plymouth Meeting. Galaxy Burger and Beyond and Moe’s Tavern from the Simpsons will be opening shortly in four to five storefronts. These ticketed events are geared towards fans and to people who are looking for something fun and new to do. Galaxy Burger is where all sci fi worlds have collided. There is something for every fan of sci fi. We have screen used costumes, photo ops, props, and characters from your favorite sci fi. We have a 1:1 scale replica of Millennium Falcon, the transporter from Star Trek, a replica of the trash compactor from Star Wars, a Mandalorian Jail, the Tardis, and a ton more. There are items from Planet of the Apes, Firefly, you name it. We like to compare it to all of the great photo ops of a comic con, but without the crowds! Our tickets are timed so that everyone has the opportunity to have fun with the experience and take as many photos as they like without wading through a crowd of people.
Moe’s is like walking into a cartoon…but real! You can play pool, shoot darts, grab a beer, and catch the photo ops. We don’t release the phone number to Moe’s as we get a ton of crank calls as it is, but if you come you might be able to answer the phone and catch one! Spider Pig is here as are the pandas from Moe’s back room. We just ask one favor…please don’t let the pandas out! The place already reeks of tinkle and once the pandas get out, well, the smell doesn’t improve.
Both of these events are ticketed to control crowds and the tickets include food and a beverage of choice. We do have the opportunity for customers to attend both events in one day as well. Right now through January 15th, you buy tickets to one event and you get admission to the other.
Now, I think I heard about these types of pop up bars on the Preston and Steve show at some point, is that you guys?
That is us. Preston and Steve are great and have talked about several of our pop ups. We are local so we started here and we come back here as often as we can.
Is this a one time thing? Or are there other themes planned?
We have another themed experience planned for Plymouth Meeting Mall! We aren’t done yet! We are bringing Paddy’s Pub from It’s Always Sunny to the mall beginning February 25th. Yes, there is a real Paddy’s in Philly and we aren’t re-creating that. This Paddy’s is a fan based homage to the show, and will look more like the set. We will have plenty of photo ops for fans including a back alley.
These all sound awesome, not sure what my favorite is. I of course grew up with Star Wars, have been watching the Simpsons since the 90’s and the Paddy’s Pub one sounds awesome as well. Those guys are great. How long is each one planned for?
Each one is planned for around two weeks. Moe’s and Galaxy Burger will close on February 12th. Paddy’s will run through St. Patrick’s Day!
Strange question Joe, are you hiring? I would love to be Moe Szyslak for a day! Or work with Dee and Charlie at Paddy’s!
Always! We LOVE bringing fans on board to play parts in the experiences. We have had a few Moes, Marges, Mandalorians, Star Trek admirals, Storm Troopers, and a couple of Flanders. If you want to work, so much the better! We encourage everyone, whether they want to work or just have fun, to come in costume!
When do you expect to open the first one?
Moe’s and Galaxy Burger both open January 28th.
Right, you mentioned that. What else can you tell us Joe, I have a million questions, but I can’t wait to get to all of these amazing places!
We can not wait to bring some energy to Plymouth Meeting Mall and hopefully welcome people who have never been here or haven’t been here in a long time. Part of our business model is to bring people back to malls. The pandemic was hard on all businesses, but retail really took a hit. Plymouth Meeting Mall is home to many small businesses with so many unique offerings. We hope to get customers back in here to have some fun and maybe check out a store or two. Also our events help sponsor a local community robotics program in Delaware County. Eastern PA Robotics Alliance has robotics programs for kids in grades K through 12. We all volunteer there so we donate a percentage of our profits to the group.
Joe, that is awesome, I really can’t wait to grab a few friends and check it out. That double admission this sounds great. Thank you and I love that you guys help out the robotics club. These will be upstairs towards Burlington Coat Factory if I didn’t mention that before right?
Yes, upstairs near Dave and Busters towards the Burlington side of the Plymouth Meeting Mall. Thank you.
Here are the websites for each if you want to check them out:
Thank you for checking this out and thank you for supporting our local businesses. If you are looking for a one time event, we have the Conshohocken Adult Prom, Back to the 80’s coming up February 26th.
