Blessing of the Bread at the Conshohocken Italian Bakery

       Last Sunday we were invited to the Blessing of the Bread at the Conshohocken Italian Bakery. While we have heard of this in the past, it is not something we have attended on a regular basis. While I call it the blessing of the bread, it is more formally known as the Feast of Saint Joseph.

        In addition to the staff and family who own the Conshohocken Italian Bakery, many customers were on hand as Monsignor Charles Sangermano of Holy Saviour Parish performed the Blessing of the Bread. No one went home empty handed… there was plenty of bread for everyone. In addition to the bread, there was some homemade Italian wine, and a very important element in the form of fava beans which played an important role in the Middle Ages as Sicily faced a famine.
